WeedSeeker® and DoD
In
the 90's the Department of Defense(DoD) made a strong commitment to
use Environmental Technology. Their emphasis on being sound environmental
stewards led them to establish a goal to reduce pesticide use by 50%
by the year 2000. Last year, the EPA awarded DoD a Special Achievement
Award in recognition of their efforts to reduce pesticide use. They
achieved the goal and are continuously working to exceed it by testing,
evaluating and using new technologies.
The
Armed Forces Pest Management Board requested an evaluation of the WeedSeeker®
equipment in 1997 and in 1998, Nellis Air Force Base conducted a one-year
evaluation on post-emergent weed control in parking lots, runways and
taxiways. They found the equipment easy to use, reduced their labor
costs by 50% and herbicides costs and use by approximately 75%. Nellis
AFB liked the equipment so much they decided to buy it at the end of
the Evaluation period.
NDVEDD-Jacksonville
conducted a second series of tests and evaluation in the Fall of 99.
Evaluation criteria included manufacturing quality, performance, reliability,
user acceptance, safety, and suitability for DoD use. The system performed
well and met or exceeded all expectations.
