In the past they sprayed a 1% solution of Roundup® (one quart in 25 gallons of water). Using a boom sprayer with conventional fl at nozzles, the 25 gallon solution covered one acre. Their targets were broad leaf weeds growing through the dried grass cover crop in vineyard middles during the summer. With a WeedSeeker® system installed on a boom, they are able to double the concentration of Roundup® to 2%. The higher concentration enables them to kill tougher weeds missed at the lower concentration and they use 50% less Roundup® per sprayed acre than before. David Rosenthal, of San Bernabe Vineyards states " A better spray job at half the cost of the herbicide per sprayed acre."
Using the WeedSeeker® system mounted on the sides of tractors, they apply the new Aventis herbicide, Rely. Mr. Rosenthal said they have been able to control weeds that escaped the winter applied pre emergent herbicides while at the same time doing other tractor work such as mowing or disking.
Mr. Rosenthal commented, "The selectivity of the WeedSeeker® system spraying only the weeds and not the bare soil has saved us 70% or more over a conventional banded spray using the herbicide, Rely. We have covered 1600 acres so far this year with these sprayers and our savings are over $15.00 in herbicide costs per gross vineyard acre." use will increase.
